Why is giving important?

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”        2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Giving is a way we can show gratitude to God for meeting the needs of our life, especially saving us through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is an act of worship that is done with joy and thankfulness. How we use our possessions is a way we demonstrate our priorities (Matthew 6:21). It should not be something that you do out of guilt, manipulation or a desire to “double your money.” God blesses those who give in manifold ways, not simply multiplying wealth.

The New Testament model for giving is generosity. It expands the Old Testament model of the “tithe,” which means tenth (Genesis 14:2; Malachi 3:8-10). The Israelites were instructed to give God a tenth of their income first (“firstfruits”; Exodus 23:19). The “tithe” is the starting point for giving. We encourage new believers to start by giving a tenth to the Lord through their local church and then, giving generously as the Lord leads you. The faithful giving of God’s people is the way the Lord has designed to supply His local church so we can preach, teach, help the poor, sick and needy; and many other physical and spiritual needs in our community and around the world.

In addition to basic giving, sometimes you will sense the Lord is leading you to financially support special programs or projects. Some of those include: student ministry, camps, building projects or missionaries. Feel free to contact us if you have questions about how to support other ministries at 580.363.5058.
